Silent rating playbook
The 1-star review with no comment: what to say when there is nothing to answer
A no-text 1-star rating gets a short, open, non-defensive reply: identify yourself, say you take feedback seriously, and invite the reviewer to share what happened. Two sentences beat a paragraph. Eight examples by business type below.
The 2-sentence formula
Sentence 1: identify yourself by name and role, and acknowledge the rating without defensiveness.
Sentence 2: invite the reviewer to share what happened through one direct channel.
That is the whole reply. There is nothing specific to answer, so anything longer reads as protesting too much.

Silent 1-star questions, answered
Why do people leave 1-star ratings with no comment?
Some had a bad experience and did not want to write it up. Some tapped the wrong business. Some are competitors or drive-by ratings. You usually cannot know which, which is exactly why the right response is short, open, and non-defensive.
What is the 2-sentence formula for a no-comment 1-star rating?
Sentence one: identify yourself by name and role, and acknowledge the rating without defensiveness. Sentence two: invite the reviewer to share what happened through a direct channel. Two sentences beat a paragraph because there is nothing specific to answer.
Can a 1-star rating with no text be removed?
Only if it violates Google's content policies, such as a competitor rating you down or a user with a pattern of fake engagement. A silent rating from a real visitor is not removable. Respond publicly either way; your reply is for future customers.
Does responding to silent ratings actually matter?
Yes. Future customers scan how you handle the worst-looking feedback. A calm, named, two-sentence reply under a silent 1-star turns an anonymous attack into evidence that you pay attention and stay professional under pressure.
Think it is fake?
Respond publicly, then report it: samples + exact steps.
